Our Approach to Anxiety Therapy

We make sure to fully understand the whole person, not just their anxiety. This allows your clinician to see what is working for you and what isn’t. We pride ourselves on meeting the client where they are. A person-centered approach is the core of our practice.

More often than not, we might hold on to things that are bothering us, and that can manifest into physical and emotional symptoms. By talking it through with a licensed provider, you can empower yourself to feel better overall. Learning new ways to cope is a crucial part of this process, and we are here to help!

Our anxiety therapists utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to better understand the root causes of your symptoms. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy allows us to look at core beliefs about ourselves, which are a person’s most central ideas about themselves, others and the world. We see all of our life experiences through this lens, and for some people, that can be maladaptive. By understanding those beliefs, we also have the ability to work on them and change them if we see fit. Understanding your own core beliefs allows you to also understand where your thoughts are coming from. These can be automatic thoughts that are triggered by stress.

In addition, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can help to expand your toolbox of coping skills. DBT covers 4 different topic areas, including mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal effectiveness. In each of those 4 areas, there are specific hands-on, concrete skills that can help you to manage your symptoms and take control of your life. These skills can be very helpful in the treatment of anxiety. Mindfulness is all about being able to stay in the present moment, which can be very difficult with anxiety. Mindfulness skills set the foundation for all the other areas of DBT skills.

Leaving each therapy session feeling as though you are equipped to deal with the stress you are faced with in the real world can give you a sense of empowerment over your life. We are here to be a part of that journey, in giving you all the skills you need.

Yoga and Nutrition can also be beneficial in your journey to heal your anxiety.

FAQs

  • The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.” Lastly, if your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

  • We can schedule a free consultation call to discuss what you are looking for from a therapist. We will discuss your current symptoms, past therapy experiences (if any), and who we think might be the best fit. You can also read more about each clinician here.

  • You will learn new coping skills in session and talk about where it could fit into your life. You will be given handouts on them when applicable and check in again during your next session to see where the skills fit into your life.

  • Your Anxiety therapist is going to continue to teach you more skills throughout each session. More often than not, it's not the actual skill that's not working, it's more a matter of being able to figure out how that skill fits into your life. Sometimes we have to adjust accordingly. We understand as anxiety therapists that it can be frustrating to learn new skills and feel as though they are not working. that is why it can be so helpful to work with a professional to make sure that you are finding out how to fit the skills into your life.
